Heritage Home and Sustainable Modern Design
St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia
Architect David Saunders from S2 Design has designed and built this project using a magnificent showcase of amazing products, workmanship and design. The eye-catching project is an extensive restoration, plus alterations and additions, to a heritage significant Victorian dwelling in the City of Port Phillip.
Breezway Altair Louvre Windows have been incorporated into the contemporary and environmentally sustainable design to assist with energy efficiency which allows the home to be kept at a comfortable temperature without the need for traditional air conditioning.
The bright and colourful kitchen has Altair Louvre Windows installed to encourage cross-flow ventilation and also to provide make-up air when removing cooking smells. The ensuite uses Altair Louvres with satina glass blades to allow hot steam and moisture to escape quickly while still providing ventilation and privacy.
Lastly, a double bay Altair Louvre Window has been used up high in the living areas next to a fixed lite door to further allow hot built-up air to leave the room and be replaced with cooling southerly sea breezes (even when the door is closed).
The creative design is a stunning piece of contemporary architecture and demonstrates thorough social, functional and environmental considerations.
The home was featured in a national television series called “Australia’s Best Houses” and went to air on Channel 7two on 16th November. This is a fitting tribute to all the hard work that went into building such a home. To view the segment on this house from the episode, please follow a link from the S2 design website.
