Four Dwellings on 800m² – Maximising Space, Privacy and Natural Ventilation
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA
Housing density and supply are ongoing issues for Australian cities. This small project demonstrates that density doesn’t mean loss of amenity or environmental performance. The four houses built on 800m² are designed for autonomy with separate access and good privacy. Shared outdoor and landscaped spaces create areas where families can come together, or that can be used as private outdoor space. For ultimate flexibility each house has a separate independent guest area with kitchenette and bathroom. The two sites can comfortably accommodate an extended family of 20 people – each with their own private space.
Environmental responses have been consistently applied within each dwelling to optimise comfort through passive solar design and to reduce energy use.
Breezway Louvre Windows have been strategically incorporated throughout the homes to enhance natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to move efficiently through living area and shared spaces. This cross-flow ventilation reduces reliance on mechanical cooling, helping to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round.
Every element — from materials and construction methods to orientation, sun shading, openings, water tanks and gardens — has been designed to sustainably support extended or individual family living, with Breezway Louvres playing a key role in delivering healthier, naturally ventilated interiors.
