Where Coastal Views Meet Natural Ventilation
SOUTH BRIGHTON, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA
Perched high above South Brighton with sweeping views of the ocean and Adelaide Hills, this striking family home was carefully designed to maximise its elevated position while responding sensitively to planning requirements and the surrounding landscape.
A key feature of the design is its commitment to passive environmental performance. Extensive glazing captures panoramic views and abundant daylight, while Breezway Altair Louvre Windows play a vital role in maintaining year-round comfort. Positioned to harness prevailing coastal breezes, the operable louvre windows provide high levels of natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to flow deep into the home, reducing the reliance on mechanical cooling systems.

The design effectively blends contemporary forms with natural and textured materials. With amazing views in almost every direction it was a challenge to balance the glazing and openness of the home with the need for privacy and some solid walls.
The home's elevated location creates ideal conditions for cross ventilation. High-level Breezway Louvres support the stack effect in living areas, enabling warm air to escape naturally while drawing cooler air inside. This helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures during Adelaide's warmer months while preserving the open connection to the surrounding environment. Occupants can easily adjust the louvres to control airflow, delivering a responsive indoor environment that adapts to changing weather conditions.
Environmental sustainability was a central consideration throughout the project. Deep eaves and overhangs provide protection from excess summer heat, while the natural ventilation provided by the Breezway Louvre Windows works in partnership with the home's passive design principles to reduce energy consumption. Complemented by hydronic heating, rooftop solar panels and rainwater harvesting, the result is a highly efficient home that balances architectural sophistication with everyday comfort, fresh air and sustainable living.
