Doonan Glasshouse Maximises Cross Flow Ventilation with Breezway Louvre Windows

NOOSA, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

This project was Sarah Waller’s own personal, architect’s ‘dream home’ in Doonan, Queensland and was designed around three primary elements: a white concrete slab that appears to be floating, long expanses of full height glazing and a near flat roof. The clean lines, total transparency to the landscape and minimal detail of this design combine to create an architectural home that reflects the houses of the 1950’s Modern Movement, whilst the monochromatic colour scheme of the finishes and interior styling pull the house together, resulting in a chic, modern and flowing family home.

With an extensive architectural background and expertise as a licensed builder, Sarah creatively designed her home inspired by the simplicity and sophistication of mid-century modern architecture.

Walls of glass, including the incorporation of Breezway Altair Louvre Windows, span the length of the home, blurring the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The extensive glazing also allows an abundance of natural light and ventilation to stream through, imbuing warmth and unimpeded views of the verdant surrounds. Sarah Waller states “I love that you have all the comforts of indoors, yet you really feel part of the landscape. We wake up with the sun and experience the subtle changes in weather throughout the day.”

Taking style cues from the Modernist Palm Springs pools popular during the 1950’s, a similar look is evoked with a streamlined resort-style linear pool, offset with a chic cabana furnished with casual pieces ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sweeping views.

Port Douglas Renovation Open to Views and Ventilation

Port Douglas Renovation Open to Views and Ventilation

Port Douglas Renovation Opens up to Views and Ventilation

PORT DOUGLAS, FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

The Team at Urban Abode Building Design have revamped this beautiful home located in Port Douglas, North of Cairns in Far North Queensland. With beautiful tropical surroundings, the home was renovated to take advantage of natural sea breezes and ocean views to create the perfect living environment for household occupants to enjoy.

Breezway Louvre Windows have been utilised in multiple spaces throughout the home to help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. A whole wall of Breezway Louvres in the downstairs living room provides maximum ventilation and clear views out to the tropical landscape, helping one to connect with nature when occupying this space. The middle level of the home incorporates Breezway Louvres in the kitchen. This allows cool, refreshing breezes to flow in from one side of the building and out into the entertaining area to keep guests comfortable no matter what time of day it is.

The beauty of the Breezway Louvre is that all windows can be custom designed to any size or shape required to suit the client’s needs. Another great example is the use of louvres in the bedrooms. Breezway Louvres have been installed with multiple bays in the external wall façade and have also been integrated into the bifold door system; this is perfect for purging air at night while the doors are closed and occupants are sleeping.

Urban Abode Building Design take pride in their work to ensure an individualised design that will provide the best possible outcome for the client, and this Port Douglas renovation is no exception. The blurred lines between indoor and outdoor spaces make it a truly unique tropical paradise for the clients to bask in all year round.

This project won the Building Designers Association of Queensland Far North Qld Regional Design Award for Residential Alterations/Additions: Houses over $800,000 construction cost.

House of the Year filled with Breezway Louvre Windows

House of the Year filled with Breezway Louvre Windows

House of the Year filled with Breezway Louvre Windows

FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

The award-winning Daphne Residence designed by NEArchitecture works with the natural slope of the site, operating over three separate levels, each connecting with the ground in a different manner. Each level houses a different function, from social to sleeping to utility; while maintaining an immediacy suitable for living.

The lineal form is staggered, providing an interplay of light and shade that shifts through the day. Natural ventilation and generous views out to nature are captured by utilising Breezway Altair Louvre Windows in the design. Despite the weather conditions, there is always both an external and internal space for refuge and prospect.

The detailing of the home allows for fluid movement between the inside and out; thresholds have been blurred; external decks and terraces offer comfort in living. There’s a natural attraction to occupy the edge, swing your feet off the deck, or sit on the vegie garden wall in the shade, sharing a conversation about the day.

The Daphne Residence is honest, unassuming, and a place you want to be. It’s home.

The project won a 2020 AIA Far North Queensland Regional Award for House of the Year.
