Breezway Louvres help win Best Contemporary Residential Design for 2021

QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
‘A House that Breathes’ is a new build project by Adrian Ramsay Design House. The project has been designed with no fixed windows, only doors and Breezway Louvre Windows to allow the house to breathe all year round from its fresh, natural surroundings.

The clients have never had to use their power-hungry air conditioning, even during its hottest months in tropical South-East Queensland. This is due to the constant flow of natural ventilation from wide open Breezway Louvre Windows. The owners, Heather and Glenn stated, “no matter what the weather is they can always have a louvre open”. The design of a Breezway Louvre allows blades to be freely angled, even during light rain, so that natural air can continue to flow in and circulate the house.

This strategic, well thought-out design is naturally brightened, and is all about bringing the outdoors in, to help make the home come alive and allow the owners to enjoy their living space all year round.

This project won ‘Best Contemporary Residential Design (Australia)’ by BUILD in their Architectural Awards for 2021.

Hilltop Coastal Hideaway with Breezway Louvre Windows

Hilltop Coastal Hideaway with Breezway Louvre Windows

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

Perched high on the hill this architecturally designed three bedroom home, with attached two bedroom granny flat, looks out to one of the most magnificent ocean and coastal views you are ever likely to encounter, and that’s just looking South and East. All North facing rooms also capture a beautiful mountain view – it’s a visual feast, and the number one reason the client decided to take the plunge and build on this tricky steep site.

The streamlined modern coastal home is designed over three levels and has two very distinct and separate zones. The main residence utilises the entire upper floor for the master suite and open plan living area. The entry level contains a guest room, alfresco kitchen, third bathroom and the entry foyer, which features hardwood stairs and lift access. There is also a two bedroom fully self-contained granny flat with no less than two private decks and private entrance.

This home oozes quality and its very evident how much custom construction went into bringing this job to life – it’s a very well designed and executed home that is so perfect in its proportions and its designated use – everything fits as it should into the correct sized space and most of the furniture was built or designed and built in specifically for each room.

The main living areas are open plan with 9-foot ceilings and spotted gum floors. If occupants can tear themselves away from the view they can curl up in front of the TV or gaze into the gas fireplace. A more private sunroom area off the bedroom wing also offers an alternate living space.

What at first appears to be a modest sized kitchen is packed with cutting edge technology and smart design. It is an entertainer’s delight with a bifold servery window and French doors that lead to the tiled terrace – a perfect spot to escape the strong winds that this location high on the hill could not avoid. An opening roof system allows the owners to control the weather in this protected corner of the house.

So full of light and breezes, this home has Breezway Louvre Windows installed strategically around the home to allow occupants to take in the view from this beautiful space and control the amount of ventilation into the house when they desire so they can live in comfort all year round.

Doonan Glasshouse Maximises Cross Flow Ventilation with Breezway Louvre Windows

Doonan Glasshouse Maximises Cross Flow Ventilation with Breezway Louvre Windows

NOOSA, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

This project was Sarah Waller’s own personal, architect’s ‘dream home’ in Doonan, Queensland and was designed around three primary elements: a white concrete slab that appears to be floating, long expanses of full height glazing and a near flat roof. The clean lines, total transparency to the landscape and minimal detail of this design combine to create an architectural home that reflects the houses of the 1950’s Modern Movement, whilst the monochromatic colour scheme of the finishes and interior styling pull the house together, resulting in a chic, modern and flowing family home.

With an extensive architectural background and expertise as a licensed builder, Sarah creatively designed her home inspired by the simplicity and sophistication of mid-century modern architecture.

Walls of glass, including the incorporation of Breezway Altair Louvre Windows, span the length of the home, blurring the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The extensive glazing also allows an abundance of natural light and ventilation to stream through, imbuing warmth and unimpeded views of the verdant surrounds. Sarah Waller states “I love that you have all the comforts of indoors, yet you really feel part of the landscape. We wake up with the sun and experience the subtle changes in weather throughout the day.”

Taking style cues from the Modernist Palm Springs pools popular during the 1950’s, a similar look is evoked with a streamlined resort-style linear pool, offset with a chic cabana furnished with casual pieces ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sweeping views.

This project has won the following awards:

  • 2016 Queensland Bathroom of the Year, HIA Queensland Region Housing Awards
  • Bathroom of the Year, 2016 HIA Sunshine Coast Housing Awards
  • Bathroom over $40,001, 2016 HIA Sunshine Coast Housing Awards

Sleek, Stylish Home Utilising Modern Materials

Sleek, Stylish Home Utilising Modern Materials

MACKAY, NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

The clients of this stunning home located in North Queensland were two brothers, who wanted their home to be designed with an ‘entertainer’s’ feel.

In order to meet the requirements, Tempus Design Studio designed the house with an open plan living area which was integrated with the entertainment area. High ceilings, timber beam features, mixed textures and materials creates an appealing look that the clients were extremely happy with.

The living and entertaining area are centrally located in the home and are sheltered from the western afternoon sun. A corner stacker door adjoins to the kitchen, dining and alfresco areas to maximise the ventilation and natural daylight into the core of the home. Breezway Louvre Windows and raked ceilings help complement the design as well as the flow of fresh breezes and light throughout the home.

Large Family Home Maximising Beach-Side Views & Ventilation

Large Family Home Maximising Beach-Side Views & Ventilation

MACKAY, NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
This large family home designed by Tempus Design Studio was built on a small block on the coastline in North Queensland.

The ‘Sunset Abode’ was designed to capture the beach-side views from all multi levels within the home and for all aspects to flow together seamlessly.

A modern facade was called for with the incorporation of a raised pool. Due to the overall height of the building it was important to create a facade with depth and character. The double height alfresco area and cantilevered elements help soften the facade by providing articulation.

Breezway Louvre Windows are incorporated into the bedrooms, kitchen and alfresco area to offer a number of benefits to the homeowners including fresh air and wide open views out onto the natural surroundings. When closed, they offer protection from the elements so outdoor time can be enjoyed without the worry of the weather changing.

The sleeping quarters are located on the upper floor which looks down over the main living areas. With a busy family lifestyle, this allows communication between both levels whist having a feeling of separation.

The project was the winner of the BDAQ Regional Design Awards 2019 – New Houses $750,001 – $1,000,000 Construction Cost.
